Bring your Lunch and Learn something new! Registration is required for each event in the Nature Photography Series.
In session 1, Grace will talk about the growing fascination with nature photography and the thrill of freezing a moment in time with a still photograph. Topics will include the importance of light as a foundation for a successful photograph, how to tell a story with your pictures, suggestions on how to find and approach various subjects including birds, mammals, insects, flowers, and landscapes. She will touch on the power of photography in the conservation movement. Please note that you do NOT need to own expensive gear to attend this session.
Session 2 will focus on the art of nature photography. We will review the importance of understanding how the quality, intensity and direction of light impacts your photographs. Composition for appeal and impact, as well as inclusion of pleasing habitat elements in your pictures will be demonstrated. This will help to make your photographs more artful. Grace’s husband, Ted, will demonstrate how to create pleasing slideshows and he will also share some tips on creating videos. Please note that you do Not need to own expensive gear to enjoy this session and the topics can be applied to any photos (pets, family, vacations, etc) as well as nature.
Session 3 will be a more technical session but at an introductory level. Topics will include:
- How to choose a lens for the photos that you envision (wide angle, mid-range, telephoto) The triangle of exposure (ISO, shutter speed and aperture), and how each affects the outcome of your photos.
- How to achieve sharp focus and pleasing blurs.
- Discussion of the various shooting modes on your camera and how to use them in artful ways.
- Quick mention of software choices for your post processing options.
Note that you do not need to bring an understanding of these topics to this session. It is meant to open doors for you as to what possibilities are out there for your photography efforts and to help you begin to explore the fun of nature photography.
About the Speaker:
Grace Scalzo has loved the outdoors since childhood. The combination of photography and nature opened her eyes in new ways and ignited a passion for the art form. She has authored two children’s books and her images have been recognized and published by NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) and “Nature’s Best” Magazine. She writes for online nature photography forums about the ethics of nature photography and other current topics.
Photography has great power in showcasing our natural world. Grace believes that if people see and feel a connection to their environment they will care about preserving it. With this in mind, she creates her images, prepares slide shows and speaks to Audubon groups, photography clubs and libraries.
Grace resides in Spring Branch, Texas, with her husband, Ted, who lends his technical and creative energy to her website and slide show preparations.
