This presentation will be on Medicinal Plants and Herbs. It will describe some of the history of medicinal plants and herbs and what chemicals they contain that make them effective medicines. It will cover many plants and herbs that grow in Comal County, and others that grow elsewhere in America, but are very important in traditional healing and in the pharmaceutical and medical community.
About the Speakers:
The presentation was created by Dr. Clare Helminiak and Dr. Gene Carnicom. Clare is a physician and Gene is a social worker and medical anthropologist. They provided health care in the Indian Health Service for Native Americans and Alaska Natives for over 25 years in South Dakota, New Mexico, Alaska, Montana and Arizona. Clare also worked in Washington DC for 5 years at the Department of Health and Human Services and 2 years at the White House. Clare and Gene are members of the Comal Master Gardeners, and they co-chair the Butterfly Garden at the Mammen Family Public Library in Bulverde.
